Of Award Winning Photographs and Unbuttoned Pants

This past Sunday, on the way to the studio in Suffern,NY,  I made a quick stop by the Ringwood Manor Association of the Arts Barn Gallery to check out the art that was installed the day before for the 2013 Member's Exhibition.  Ends up that I won the photography category with the photograph of dancer's Cassandra Londono and Aurora Black below. The photgraph was created in the old theater section of the BSP Lounge in Kingston, NY. It was one of those sessions in which one just knows there will be a ton of winning images created, and there were, in other words, I was doing my job.

Also below is a celebratory picture of myself with the photograph (16x24 archival mounting for the curious, the photograph will last longer on the planet than I will). I was on my way to the studio to do some painting, so yeah, my pants are unbuttoned too, they are about a size too small and for doing things like painting and crawling under cars. One never knows when one may have reason for celebratory photographs, so, lesson learned on buttoning my pants. Never too old to learn something new.

The RMAA Member's Exhibition runs through June 19th at the Ringwood Manor State Park Barn Gallery in Ringwood, NJ. If you're in the area, stop by and check things out, there is a lot of excellent work installed.

PM Studios @ Darling Lingerie

Recently, I gathered up Casey Michele, and headed out to Bloomsburg, PA to spend an afternoon shooting at local lingerie shop, Darling Lingerie. Lauren Nicole of Lauren Nicole's Salon, rearranged her appointment schedule to take care of Casey's hair and makeup, as well as get some camera time herself.
Being closed on Mondays, we had the run of the place, and took full advantage of it. I even bought a dress, as I am wont to do. The dress is on-hand at the studio in Suffern, NY, of course.

There are a few on location photos of Casey below, and more over on the Porcelain Monkey Studios Facebook page (along with Lauren too). Look more of Casey and Darling's goods in the future.

Big thanks to Melanie Marx @ Darling Lingerie for both having us (and for the wardrobe), and to Lauren Nocole for the styling. Oh, and of course thanks to Marley's Brewery and Grille for after work refreshments.

Last, but certainly not least, head over to DarlingLingerie.com and use code PORCELAIN at check out for 15% off your order (shoes excluded).

100th Anniversary - 1913 Armory Show at Montclair Museum

The year marks the 100th Anniversary of the then controversial '1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art ', since known as the Armory Show. Being the first exhibition of modern art in America, the show travelled from New York, to Chicago, to Boston, with controversies and demonstrations travelling with it. Really, people used to take their culture very seriously. See the riots at the debut of Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring for reference.

Among the general unrest caused bt the Armory Show were prostests by students of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago against the 'radical art'. Replicas of Heni Matisse paintings were made and burned in the streets. A mock trial was held with Matisse was tried in absentia, and an attempt was made to burn him in effigy in the streets. (The attempt was stopped by Chicago Police, figuring that the protest had gone far enough when lighting things on fire was becoming part of it.)

In commemoration of American artists in the 1913 show, the Montclair Art Museum has been holding an exhibit The New Spirit: American Art in the Armory Show, 1913 that closes on June 16, 2013. Considering that, 'soon' tends to be my plans for visting exhibitions, then 'soon' never comes, with some free time this past Sunday, I did make it over to the museum to take in the exhibit, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Not surprisingly, there was a bit of a rucurring photography related name in the exhibtion of paintings: Alfred Stieglitz. Stieglitz, one of the 'big three' in photography (the other two being Edward Steichen and Paul Strand), was instrumental in bringing modern art to America in the early 20th century. Among other artists, Stieglitz's 291 galler in New York City, introduced America to Picasso and held the first public showing of Georgia O'Keeffe. A photographer by vocation and artistic heart, Steiglitz recognized, promoted and respected art as a whole and was instrumental in helping photography to secure its place in it.

The Armory exhibition at Montclair, of course did not allow photographs to be taken, but the rest of the museum did. A sampling of their general exhibitons are below.
